I’m guessing that a good number of those who check in here will either be considering, or have already built, your own website. For those who are in the considering phase, here’s some knowledge I gained from this experience:
Welcome to my website and blog! Let's face it, standard business blogs can be boring--I'll try to blast that trend by posting helpful information, as well as snippets of a more personal nature. We may only design a brochure together, develop an ongoing relationship, or you may be a friend checking in. Blogs are ubiquitous these days, so I’m not delusional about the impact of this one. But here’s my commitment to posting regularly and with purpose. I’m guessing that a good number of those who check in here will either be considering, or have already built, your own website. For those who are in the considering phase, here’s some knowledge I gained from this experience: I've learned a good bit about web-building in the past week, here’s some advice: 1) Select your hosting site FIRST, and find out how/if you can import the site to your host. Your host is the most important aspect of site building, because if you can't get tech support or utilize your host’s good prices or free domain name because your template won’t import, you are out of luck! Weebly (and most other free template sites) does NOT import to other hosting sites. 2) Research your domain name and see if there are close competitors with your name, or names akin to yours. How many similar hits may impact the name you select. 3) If you know you will be seeking a web presence, pay close attention to your business name and identity from the start. It’s far less convenient to change your name after you’ve filed for your fictitious business name, set up a business account, and printed collateral materials.

Thanks Pamela. Right now, our website (www.sailcetacean.com) is, well, a montage (blog entries, photo gallery, project discussions, one published article in search of more company). You are so brave to launch and manage your own site. Just settling down and writing anything is a huge challenge.

Thank you Jacquie, Elaine and Judy for checking in on my endeavor. I'm enjoying the journey--can't really believe I put up a website on my own! As an untechie perfectionist, it was a challenge to figure out the workings of Weebly's platform. My biggest regret was not determining web host FIRST. I have had several technical issues and have notified Weebly days ago, but I've had absolutely no response. When my 2-year subscription is up, I'll likely switch over to iPage and transfer the contents of this site to a WordPress template. Meanwhile I've added the skill set to my repertoire.

Pamela LangleyIn the past decade I have written memoirs for a nun, tutored children from Somalia, edited a college literary magazine, interned at Literary Arts in Portland, published a few stories, graduated from University with highest honors, given a speech to a packed house at the Schnitz, remodeled a fixer-upper, written grants for programs that helped, extended my emotional /intellectual horizons, made an intra-state move, started a business, regained my groove, placed my finger back on the pulse, joined Facebook, Pinterest and LinkedIn, bought a smartphone, traveled, raised puppies, and most importantly--honed my writing skills. I bare myself here on The Paper Garden and hope some moments will resonate with you. Archives
